The Eight Kinds Of Coimbra Tour, Compared

The groups below come from what is genuinely bookable in this city, not from a template dropped on every destination. Some hold ten options and some hold two, and the ones with two are still here because two real choices is a decision worth making. Every product carries its own rating, duration and from-price, read off the listing it is sold on.

Schist Villages of the Lousã The largest group on the roster, and the one that takes a whole day. The aldeias do xisto are stone villages built into the Lousã range east of the city, mostly abandoned in the twentieth century and partly restored since. What separates these trips is how much walking is in them and how many villages they reach: some run Talasnal and back, some add Casal Novo and Candal, and a few pair the drive with a river beach. Read the walking distance before the price. 8 options The University and the Joanina Library This is the sight most visitors come for, and it is the one with the most ways to buy it. The university sells its own tiered tickets at the kiosk, and the tours here add a guide to some or all of the same rooms. The Joanina Library runs on timed entry with a hard cap per slot, so a tour that includes it is buying you a specific twenty minutes rather than open access. Check which rooms a ticket actually covers: several exclude the library itself. 5 options City Walking Tours Coimbra is a hill with a university on top, so a walking tour here is mostly a climb and a guide is the difference between a staircase and a story. Shared departures price per person; private walks price per group, which often makes a family of four cheaper in total than four seats on a shared one. The cards say which basis each uses. Several are built around one thread, student traditions or the medieval town, rather than a general overview. 5 options Fátima Day Trips Fátima is about ninety minutes south and these run long, with transport included, which is why they cost several times what a city walk does. The real difference between them is what else is in the day: some add Nazaré or Óbidos on the coast, some keep the whole day at the sanctuary. If the sanctuary itself is the point rather than the drive, read the time on site before the total duration. 4 options Roman Conímbriga Conímbriga is the best-preserved Roman site in Portugal and it is close enough to be a half day rather than an expedition. The draw is the floor mosaics, which are outdoors and in place rather than lifted into a museum. The trips here differ mostly in whether a guide comes with them and whether the site museum is included, and one pairs it with Montemor-o-Velho castle on the way back. 3 options Tomar and the Templars Tomar is about an hour and a quarter south and the Convento de Cristo is a UNESCO site in its own right, built out from a round Templar oratory across five centuries of additions. These are full days with transport, and some of them add Almourol or Batalha. It is the kind of place where a guide earns the fee, because the building's whole interest is which century you are standing in. 3 options Mondego River Cruises The Mondego is the reason the city is where it is, and the cheapest way to see the Alta as a whole is from below it. Two different purchases sit in this group: a short sightseeing run from the city bank, and the kayak descents that start upstream near Penacova and take most of a day. They are not alternatives to each other. Both are weather-dependent in a way the listings tend to bury. 2 options Family Attractions A small group, and it is here because a family visit to Coimbra is a genuinely different decision from a couple's. Portugal dos Pequenitos, the miniature-Portugal park on the Santa Clara bank, is the anchor: it opened in 1940 to Cassiano Branco's design and it is the one attraction here built for children rather than tolerated by them. Check opening hours by season before planning a day around it. 2 options

A few things are deliberately missing from the groups above. The free pay-what-you-want walks have their own section further down, because how you pay for a walk is not a kind of thing to do. The self-guided audio tours, Buçaco forest and the fado evening are each on this page, in the table below, but each is a single product rather than a real choice between several, so neither earns a heading of its own. Airport and station transfers are transport, and they get no group at all.

Coimbra Beyond The City: Day Trips Worth The Train
