Coimbra is a city built on one steep hill above one river, and the map is the fastest way to understand why the days here arrange themselves the way they do. The university sits on top of the hill, in the Alta, with the Joanina library and the Paço das Escolas inside the same walled group. The Baixa is the flat commercial town underneath it, running to the Mondego. Rua da Sofia and its colleges head north out of the Baixa, and Santa Clara, Portugal dos Pequenitos and the Quinta das Lágrimas are all on the far bank. The centre is small, and the Baixa is ten minutes end to end on the flat. The climb from the Baixa to the university is shorter on a map than it is on your legs, which is what the stairs and the Elevador do Mercado exist for. And Conímbriga, which reads like a city sight, is 16 km south at Condeixa and needs its own half day.
